After a long blogging absence, I'm picking it up again as there are some big events on the horizon in our lives and it will be good to have people kept up to speed as things happen. As many already know, our soon-to-be-born baby boy was diagnosed at our 20 week scan with transposition of the great arteries. The quick summary of this is that the main 2 arteries in his heart that go to the lungs and body are switched around so instead of blood flowing in one circuit (oxygenated in the lungs and going to the body and then back) his blood would flow in two closed circuits (oxygenated in the lungs and back and out to the body and back) meaning he would not be getting any oxygen to his body. Amazingly, they can do surgery and repair this and there is >90% chance that the surgery will be completely curative and he will have no further complications, though he will need to be monitored for the rest of his life by a cardiologist.
We are due to go down to London on May 3 for induction of labor at a hospital near to the Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital and the baby will be stabilized and transferred there as soon as possible after birth. He will probably have surgery in the first week of life and then will have 7-14 days of recovery (give or take) at the hospital before we're discharged home.
There are obviously a huge number of unknowns at this point in the process, but I will try to keep everyone up to speed on details as this all unfolds next week.
In the mean time, we would appreciate your prayers for us, for baby boy, and for Arie as well as he will have a bit of a hard time. We have parents coming to help take care of him, but he hasn't had to spend much time away from mommy and daddy before.
