Last week Jansen turned one month old and this week it has been one month since his surgery. Praise God for the undeserved blessing of having a baby who looks and acts like any normal baby. Sometimes we are all too aware of what could have been and just marvel at the gift of our healthy boy. Yesterday we saw the pediatric cardiologist at Addenbrookes who looked at Jansen's heart by echocardiogram and said that all looks to be functioning fine and Jansen is "firing on all cylinders." What a relief! The only slight concern they have with Jansen is that he is just now back to his birth weight since he lost a lot of weight throughout the whole surgery and recovery time period. He is steadily gaining weight though, so it is only a slight concern. We're starting to see some chub on his cheeks and he's developing an impressive double chin so I'm sure he'll be caught up in no time. The dr. yesteraday decreased Jansen's diuretic medications so that should help him regain water weight too. We have an appointment next week with the cardiologists from Great Ormond Street and they will likely stop his diuretics completely. Hopefully that will make him less thirsty and he can stretch out his current demanding feeding schedule of every 1.5 to 2 hours around the clock. Last night was his first night on less diuretics and he went 2.5 hours between all the feeds. It felt like heaven to get a couple 2 hour stretches of sleep during the night!
Ryan goes back to work next week so then I get to figure out how people possibly manage to care for an inquisitive, energetic, strong-willed 2 year old at the same time as a hungry, fussy 1 month old. Looking forward to the challenge. :)
